Cemented carbide as an industrial tooth, is one or a variety of refractory metal carbide (WC, TiC, etc.) as a hard phase, with transition metals (Co, etc.) as a bonding phase, the use of powder metallurgy technology to prepare and produce multiphase materials. As a cutting carbide tool, the commonly used carbides are WC, TiC, TaC, NbC, etc., and the commonly used bonding phase is Co, Ni, Fe, etc. The strength of cemented carbide mainly depends on the content of the bonding phase. Carbide has the advantages of high strength, high hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, low linear expansion coefficient, etc., widely used in many industrial production and processing operations, is one of the best tool materials.

According to the analysis of the relevant parameters of physics, the mechanical properties of cemented carbide are mainly manifested in the following aspects:

1. Bending strength: The bending strength of cemented carbide is lower than that of high-speed steel. The higher the cobalt content in cemented carbide, the higher its strength. With the same cobalt content, the bending strength of WC-TIC-Co alloy decreases with the increase of TiC content, in addition to the type of carbide, the size of WC grain also affects the strength of cemented carbide, and the bending strength of coarse-crystal cemented carbide is higher than that of medium-grain cemented carbide.

2, compressive strength: The compressive strength of carbide is very high, which can be 30%-50% higher than high-speed steel, about 3500-5600MPa, and hot isostatic pressing products can reach 6000MPa. The compressive strength of cemented carbide is related to the cobalt content, and the compressive strength is maximum when the cobalt content is 5%. The compressive strength of fine grain cemented carbide is greater than that of coarse grain, the compressive strength of YT class cemented carbide is lower than that of YG class cemented carbide, and decreases with the increase of TiC content. Adding a small amount of TaC, NbC, VC, etc., can refine the WC grains and improve the compressive strength.

3, tensile strength: the tensile strength of cemented carbide is 750-1500MPa, about 1/4 of the compressive strength. Because there are many factors affecting the plasticity of cemented carbide materials, the tensile strength of a certain cemented carbide is usually within a certain range.

4, fatigue strength: Because the tool is usually working under dynamic conditions, so its fatigue strength is very important. The higher the cobalt content in cemented carbide, the higher the fatigue strength.
